Mercedes Benz Will Receive An Autopilot In Four To Five Years
Mercedes-Benz S-class may be the first production car brand with the Autonomous control system. "Autopilot", which is developed by the engineers at Daimler, will begin offering sedan after the traditional facelift, scheduled for 2017.
Thomas Weber, head of research and development Mercedes-Benz said the portal Auto Express that the system will hit the market before the release of the next generation S-class - it is, according to him, should be developed by 2021. Thus, the most logical time to introduce "autopilot" is planned restyling passenger flagship.
Interestingly, the Autonomous control system at Mercedes-Benz is almost ready, and engineers already have working prototypes. "We could do it now, but there are certain rules we must follow," said a company representative. According to Weber, some new technologies that are implemented on the S-class - in particular, the "smart" adaptive cruise control "open doors" for the application of more advanced Autonomous systems.
An unnamed Mercedes engineer confirmed this information portal, stating that the company adapts the technology of Autonomous control for serial production gradually. The first step is keeping the car in its range of motion and Active Lane Keep Assist, the second would be the ability to automatically overtaking, and then will appear and complete "autopilot".
