Language Study for East Asian Studies: Students who write their theses in a foreign language must also defend in that language. Students who study abroad for a year in the same country or in the same region, may count up to two regional or thematic courses, pending approval of the track director. The thesis advisers have the discretion to award a grade penalty of their choosing for late theses. Honors are awarded to students with a GPA of 3. Students who choose Modern Hebrew must be willing to pursue language study beyond Middlebury, if the Colleges Hebrew program is unable to offer a full range of advanced courses. These courses include all language courses, all regional courses, all global courses, all thematic courses, all courses taken abroad, and all courses with an IGST designation.
Students must study abroad for at least one semester and preferably two on a Middlebury-approved study abroad program in middlsbury region of focus. Individual departments will specify which courses fulfill these requirements.
