What if we were to observe our kids and identify things that stand out to us both positive and negative and build units of inquiry with those things embedded in them? It was really important to me that after this process was finished I asked the students to share their perspective of what it was like to help set up the classroom. One of the coolest parts of the week for me was seeing the evolution of the Question, Problem, Idea wall. Once all the teams had their data they had to go through it and decide what was important, what was worth taking note of and how they were going to consolidate and display it.
From there, families explored all the perspectives together and made a decision about whether or not they wanted homework in Grade 4. I have been posting a lot about starting with questions built from concepts, but maybe some of our students just need to start by helping others who are already on track with their passion?

Just for funI thought about everything that has happened this past month and wondered how many curricular expectations were authentically explored throughout our various inquiries… to satisfy the slowly disappearing teachery-teacher side of me… and anyone else who might ask! Again I created a Google Form, but was hlmework ready with paper options. I mentioned in my last post that I had recently been introduced to Weebly as a website creation tool.
Do more, be more, say more, lead more. Your voice is one of the most powerful things you have. Then donations started to roll in… exercise balls, yoga mats, stuffies, bean bag chairs and even a diwaniya set!
The class loved this idea, so the student who came up with the idea took action. The estimated and tested out the spacing of the cupboards.

Lots of interesting problem solving took place throughout this process. I want the parents of my students to know they are an important part of this learning community. Then I invited students to watch this Alfie Kohn interview to provoke their thinking about homework. Then students chose what element of classroom set-up they felt most interested in and we were off! Either way you slice it, I as the teacher, was the owner of that decision and hokework was something I was no longer comfortable with in trying to achieve more democratic classroom.
I shared my goals with them and then we jumped right into it!
